We have lost over 160 pounds by changing our diet and our lifestyle. In this video, we talk about how we looked and felt before we lost weight. We discuss why we adopted the diet we adopted, how we felt after we began losing weight, and some of the things we learned along our weight loss journey. We were really sick and suffered from a wide variety of issues from high blood pressure to hormonal issues and pre-diabetes. We adopted a whole food plant based (vegan) diet after eating Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, and then we cut processed sugar and flour after reading Bright Line Eating by Dr. Susan Pierce Thompson. We feel 1000% times better, and wanted to share our journey in case it can help motivate or inspires someone else on their weight loss journey. Mason Jar Salads - Meal Prep for 7 days, Cheap & Healthy

Hey Everyone! I’ve gotten a lot of questions about how I prep my salads on the weekend to set myself up for making healthy choices during the week, with salads that stay fresh for 7 days. I use Ball mason jars in the quart size to make these salads with loads of fresh fruit, cruciferous vegetables rich in cancer-fighting sulferophane like broccoli and red cabbage, and anti-cancer powerhouse mushrooms. In this video I explain the order which I stack these veggies in the jar, which consistently keeps them fresh for me for up to a week, and the way that I serve and dress them at work. I follow a bright line eating (no sugar, no flour, measured meals, mealtimes) philosophy and a whole food plant based diet to stay healthy and trim. I designed this meal plan with the vegan, WFPB and nutritarian principles explained in the books “Eat to Live,” by Dr. Joel Fuhrman (the salad is the main course!”) and“How Not to Die” by Dr. Michael Greger. This salad hits /12 items on Dr. Greger’s daily dozen in one meal! Each salad includes: 6oz fruit (pineapple, blackberry, blueberry, peach, strawberry, grape, kiwi) 12 oz mixture of baby spinach, broccoli, red cabbage, onion, mushroom Dressing: Applied right before eating = 1 tablespoon oil (I love olive, walnut, flax seed, or sesame), 2 tablespoons tamari sauce (gluten free soy sauce) or choice of vinegar I have a longer video on how I prep my bright line complaint meals with recipes. The last few weeks, I’ve been eating 3 of these huge salads a day and an absolutely enormous (I.e. 15-20 oz) serving of homemade sauerkraut. I’ve found that as there weather gets nicer and produce is getting more varied and abundant at the grocery I’ve been really craving lighter foods and fresh salad. What I Eat in a Day To Lose Weight (Vegan, 2018)

In this video I discuss what I eat in a day to lose weight. I've lost about 100 pounds eating this way. I walk you through my meal prep an recipes in separate videos (link below), but here I go over quantities and timing, addressing intermittent fasting, bright line eating measurements, and more. Basically, I eat 4 large mason jar salads every day, and one large mason jar full of homemade sauerkraut. I love eating this way because I love all the micro-nutrients and probiotics that I get, and it keeps my body basically in ketosis so that I'm constantly burning fat. I feel healthy, alert, and so much better than when I was over weight and sick. Our BRIGHT LINE EATING Meal Prep! | Crazy Weight Loss (w/Recipes!)

Hey Guys! Here's a video explaining step by step what we've done to lose a large amount of weight (John's lost 60lbs, Shannon's currently at 70lbs down). SHANNON'S MEAL PLAN: MORNING SNACK (~7am)* - 4 oz of almond or hemp milk *I only do this if I'm hungry, I try to wait until around 11am to eat to prolong my overnight fasting window as I follow an intermittent fasting regimen. BRUNCH (~10 or 11am): - 4 oz of squash - 6 oz of lentil dish - 6 oz of carrots - 6 oz of fruit - 8 oz of salad (including various vegetables, described below) - Salad Dressing: 1 Tablespoon of oil + 2 Tablespoons of tamari sauce or applecider vinegar (I like tamari best) DINNER (~4 or 5 pm): - 6 oz lentil dish - 6 oz carrots - 10 oz of salad (including vegetables) - salad dressing: 1 tablespoon oil + 2 tablespoons tamari sauce SHOPPING LIST: Produce Section: - 4 tubs of prewashed spinach - 1 red cabbage - three bell peppers, various colors - 1 butternut or other squash - 1 tube ginger paste - 3 different types of berries, your choice (I like blue, black, and raspberries) - 1 pineapple - 6 packages of tricolor baby carrots (or regular baby carrots) - 1 red onion - 1 package of precut mushrooms (I like baby bella) Aisle sections: - choice of almond or other plant based milk (UNSWEETENED) - 2 large cans of tomatoes, diced or however you prefer them, no salt added - 6 cups of lentils or pidgeon peas - I like pink lentils best, followed by green lentils, then yellow split peas/pidgeon peas Spices and condiments: (recommend finding an indian grocer): - oil of choice for salad dressing - tamari sauce or apple cider vinegar for salad dressing - salt - coriander - asefoiteda powder (often called "Hing") - Cumin seeds - Coconut oil (i buy in bulk on amazon) - cayenne pepper - Turmeric powder RECIPES: Squash: - Preheat oven to 425 degrees F - Cut squash down the middle and de-seed - Place squash face down in glass baking pan - Cover about 1/3 of squash with water - cook until fragrant (usually 1hr or so) Lentil Dish: - Thoroughly wash 6 cups of lentils 4-5 times until no bubbles - soak for at least one hour, covered in water -remove excess water before transferring to cooking pan - cover lentils with water, leaving about 2 inch of water above them, bring to a boil - Add 3 teaspoons of salt to water (you may want to salt dish further before eating) - Squeeze half tube of squeezable ginger into water - add 2.5 teaspoons of ground turmeric to water - bring to boil, then reduce heat to low (I overcooked my beans a little bit in this video, you don't want them boiling as much as I did) - after about 20 min, add about 12-13 oz of chopped spinach (1 use one of the big spinach containers from the store, or about 2.5 of the smaller prewashed spinach containers) - after another 5 min, add 2 cans of cooked tomatoes - test that beans have cooked all the way through by tasting- if they still feel undercooked, simmer on low for longer, adding water as needed - for masala seasoning, add 5-6 tablespoons of coconut oil to separate saucepan and heat on high - add 2.5 teaspons of cumin seed - add a little less than a teaspoon of asofoetida powder (hing) - let it sizzle for about 20 seconds, reduce heat - add 5 heaping teaspons of coriander - sprinkle cayenne pepper (however much or little as you like) - pour masala into bean mixture Mason Jar Salad: - 6 oz of chopped fruit(berries, pineapples) (LUNCH ONLY) - 6 oz carrots - 8 oz (lunch) or 10 oz (dinner) of salad with chopped veggies. Lentil Recipe -  Easy Protein Serving [Good for Bright Line Eating and WFPB!]

Here's a recipe that is whole food, plant based and full of delicious PROTEIN! It's compliant with the no sugar, no flour Bright Line Eating style of eating and I've explained in the video how I measure 6 oz to comply with that diet. It's also compatible with Dr. Fuhrman's nutritarian diet, Dr. MacGregor's How Not to Die plan, and Michael Pollan's advice to "eat food. mostly plants. not too much." We've lost 100 and 90 lbs each eating food like this, see our channel for additional weight loss and cooking videos. Ingredients: 3 cups of lentils (I used pink, but any type is fine) 1 tsp. turmeric powder 3 heaping Tbsp. of curry powder 2 cups of vegetable broth (I like low sodium) 2 heaping Tbsps of cumin seeds 1.5 heaping Tbsp of onion powder 2 heaping Tbsp of mustard seeds 3 heaping Tbsp of garlic/giger paste Red chili flakes/powder to taste for spice Dried fenugreek leaves ("kasoori methi" at the Indian grocer) for garnish (optional) Instructions: Lentils: - Pour lentils into a large bowl, wash extremely thoroughly until no more bubbles appear when youre washing. - Let lentils soak for at least an hour, but ideally overnight. Add more water when the water's absorbed. - Bring about 9 cups of lightly salted water to a boil - Add turmeric, 2 heaping Tbsp. curry powder to lentils and bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and let cook at least 25 min, until lentils are soft. When bubbles rise in mixture, it is good to remove them to reduce gas. Masala Mixture: - For masala spice mixture, pour vegetable broth into a saucepan and heat on high - Add 1 heaping Tbsp of curry powder, cumin seeds,onion powder, mustard seeds, garlic/giger paste - Mix all of the above thoroughly When lentils are soft (after at least 25 min cooking), add the masala mixture and stir. Add chili powder and flakes if desired for heat (to taste). Add dried fenugreek leaves for garnish. Makes about 10 servings (for Bright Line Eating Protein - 6 oz). Connect with us! Bright Line Eating Recipe for Overnight Oats! [Easy, Healthy!]

Here's a great breakfast recipe for the no sugar, no flour program known as Bright Line Eating, which has helped John and I to lose over 180 lbs! This recipe includes your breakfast grain, protein, and fruit all in one - and you can make this ahead of time on the weekend to stay bright all week! This is also whole food plant based and great for anyone following Dr. Fuhrman's nutritarian die or the How Not to Die plan - for extra weight loss! Ingredients: 1. oz Old Fashioned Oatmeal 4 fl oz Almond milk (UNSWEETENED) 0.5 oz of walnuts 0.25 oz of flax seeds 0.25 oz of hemp seeds 1/4 tsp. of vanilla extract 1/4 tsp. of nutmeg 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon 1 fruit (we used 1/2 banana, 1/2 apple, but you could also add 6 oz of any berry) Instructions: Measure old fashioned oatmeal, almond milk, walnuts, flax seeds, hemp seeds, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and cinnamon into a small mason jar. Stir, and leave in the refrigerator overnight (or up to a week). Before eating, add one serving of fruit. Heat in the microwave for 1 min or serve cold (our preference!) Connect with us! Nutritarian Diet! What it is and why we do it [Dr. Fuhrman, Eat to Live]

In this video, we explain what the nutritarian diet is. This is a diet advocated by Dr. Joel Fuhrman in his book Eat to Live. It holds that the health of your body is equal to the nutrient density of your food. That is to say, nutrients should be in the numerator and calories in the denominator. If a food is nutrient rich and low in calories, it's quite healthy. The logical conclusion of this is that we should be eating a primarily whole-food plant-based diet, with tons of fruit and vegetables that will give us the micro-nutrients we need to heal our bodies and lose weight. John and I both adopted this diet a few years ago and have lost a significant amount of weight (100 lbs for Shannon, 90 lbs for John.) Did you like this video? have questions or comments? I’ve recently lost 100 lbs, and a lot of you are asking for more information about Bright Line Eating. In this video, I review the book and provide my thoughts on why I feel it has worked for me. I hope it can serve as a reference for you as you look to implant the four bright lines: 1. No sugar 2. No flour 3. Mealtimes 4. Portion sizes These bright lines set us up for success by making sure that our weight gain and weight loss hormones of insulin, leptin, ghrelin, etc are working for us to help us lose weight. The standard American diet high on processed foods is breaking our brains, which evolved at a time before the wide availability of highly calorie dense food was prevalent. Critical biological processes which kept us alive in times of famine are causing us to pack on the pounds and leading to adverse health outcomes in times of abundance. By controlling what you eat, the promise of this program is that it helps you rewire your brain to assist in automatic weight loss which takes the burden off of willpower. This book has been a godsend for me, I hope that you enjoy this review. While I don’t agree with everything advocated by this program I think it’s a huge step in the right direction for helping people who have struggled with their weight for a long time reclaim their bodies. HOW I LOST 100  POUNDS  - 4 key principles for long term weight loss

Hey Guys! In this video I walk you through 4 things I have learned in the course of losing 100 pounds (45 kg) over the course of a year and a half. I had to basically unlearn everything I thought I knew about weight loss in order to pull it off. The key things I did were: 1. I adopted a Whole Food Plant Based Diet. (aka vegetarian, vegan) I was an avid meat eater and very shocked to learn that there is a lot of researching linking adverse health outcomes like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, in developed nations to consumption of meat and dairy. While it doesn't have to be all or nothing, eating way more fruits and veggies is a great idea to help you lose weight. This lifestyle is explained well in books like Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman (the Nutritarian diet guy), Whole by T. Colin Campbell, the China Study, and How Not to Die by Dr. Michael Greger. It's also explained in the Netflix documentaries Forks over Knives and What the Health. As a person who's paying attention, it's hard to ignore the growing body of evidence that we need a lot more whole natural foods and a lot less processed foods and meat and dairy. I lost about 60 lbs by making this change alone. I did it gradually and incrementally. 2. I stopped eating processed sugar and flour completely. I adopted an addiction theory of weight loss which is explained beautifully in the book Bright Line Eating by Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson. This theory advocates that our brains evolved during a time before processed foods, and are mal-adapted at absorbing them and keeping us healthy in the era when food is no longer scarce and it's not advantageous to store as much fat as we can. We process sugar and flour the same way we process other refined white powders like cocaine and heroin - the very same reward mechanisms light up in the brain, leading us to feel really good, crash, and reach for more. Eliminating these foods completely is much, much easier than trying to use moderation to have just a little bit. This approach is not necessary for everyone because people respond to addictive pulls differently, but for people who struggle with their weight - it's a game changer. 3. I abandoned a calories in calories out ("CICO") theory of weight loss in favor of a more nuanced HORMONAL theory of weight loss. CICO states that if we just reduce consumption of calories and increase our output (by exercising) we will lose weight. While this is true, it's not HELPFUL for overweight people, because we've tried it time and time again but can't make it stick. CICO puts the burden of weight loss on willpower and makes people who struggle with their weight feel lazy and weak willed, when in fact their hormones are out of whack and causing them to stay heavy. The REASON we gain or lose weight is not as simple as consuming too many calories and moving too little - the foods that we eat trigger hormonal processes in our body which cause us to either store or use fat. The rapid increase of insulin after eating a processed meal leads us to feel great and then crash and reach for more. When our insulin stays high throughout the day and into the evening, we become insulin resistant and leptin (the hormone that makes us feel full and satiated) is released into the blood stream but blocked by insulin a the brain stem. This leads overweight people to never feel totally full and continue to overeat. By changing the inputs and timing of what and when we eat to best keep our weight gain/loss hormones under control and make sure that insulin and leptin work together in the way they should, we get to a much more gentle and easy way of losing weight. 4. I stopped exercising. While exercise is extremely important and healthy for your long term health and well being, the evidence suggests that it is actually not super great for weight loss, because we overcompensate and consume more after we exercise and because our bodies hang on to fat when they are under stress and believe they are in a fight or flight/famine situation. Exercise is integral to long term health, but it's much easier to focus on food alone during the weight loss period, because we all have limited willpower. Hey Guys, this is a requested video about intermittent fasting! This is a great way to burn fat, put your body into ketosis, control your insulin and blood glucose levels, and feel your best. Learn about the health benefits, autophagy, timing your food to prolong the fasting window between the last time you eat on Day 1 and the next time you eat on Day 2. We both skip breakfast most days and eat the same amount of calories as we'd normally eat over the course of 3 separate meals in two meals. How to Make Sauerkraut - Meal Prepping Fermented Foods

Hey Guys! Here's my current go-to recipe for sauerkraut. Fermented foods have tons of healthy probiotics, and I feel so much better when I'm eating them. I made two weeks worth of this when I first started eating kraut, then the following weekend made one week's worth - that way by time I eat some of it, it's been fermenting for over a week, and tastes better I think. But you can make one week's worth and enjoy it 4-5 days later - no problem. NOTE: the recipe I follow in the video shows the general process well, but I used too much turmeric and I forgot to show that I also like to add BEETS for color. The below instructions show my current favorite recipe. In this video and in general I use about 3x the amount of ingredients shown below to make a really LARGE amount, but this recipe is for a more manageable starting batch. BOMB ASS KRAUT RECIPE: Yield: ~10 pint-sized mason jars of sauerkraut, depending on the size of the cabbage. Time: ~ 1 hr Ingredients Produce Aisle: - 1 Napa Cabbage (sometimes called chinese cabbage) - 1 Red Cabbage - 1/2 beet - 1 korean or daikon radish - 1 jalapenyo, habanero, or both (if you like heat - otherwise, omit) Condiments/Spices - 2 tablespoons ginger paste or freshly copped ginger - 1 teaspoon turmeric - 1/4 teaspoon cayenne (again, only if you like it spicy) - 1 -2 tablespoons of salt (start with one and add more if you need it to help the juices run) Equipment needed: - A big bowl or receptacle to mix it up in - i often use a big pot that I cook with for stews - Plastic/nitrile gloves - Paper towels - Something that seals to store the kraut in (I like mason jars) Steps - Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and set aside - the cabbage you end up chopping should be kind of shiny and clean - looking, but don't wash it, it has good bacteria from the soil on it that will help the fermentation process. - Remove the cores of the cabbage and compost or discard - Chop up the two types of cabbage in thin slices (I like to mix them up, but you can also create separate batches for a different look) place into a large bowl - - chop the beet into small pieces or slices, add to the pot - slice the radish into small pieces, add to the pot - slice the jalapenos and habaneros (if using) USING gloves (or your skin will burn), and set aside (don't add to the pot yet) - Add the salt -Start kneading and squeezing the mixture in the pot. You may want to wear latex gloves to keep your hands clean, but the salt and juices also help give the hands a youthful glow - it may sting a little as it exfoliates! - You want the cabbage to release it's juices so that it covers the lettuce. You probably need to knead it for 5-10 min - Add the gingerpaste, turmeric, cayenne, and jalapenos/habaneros (if using) and knead (using gloves) for another few minutes - Transfer the kraut to mason jars, leaving at least an inch and a half on top - Push the kraut down below the water line of its juices - Take the discarded outer leaves and tear them into smaller pieces and fold them into the tops of the mason jar - this acts as a weight to keep the kraut below the water line. -Take a paper towel and cover the lid of the jar, then screw on the outer ring - Set aside the jars in a corner of your kitchen out of the sunlight in the shade - Leave them for a few days. Don't be surprised if the top of the paper towel looks colorful (beets and turmeric) and drenched. - After 3-4 days, remove the paper towel and top level of outer leaves. There will likely be a little bit of mold/bubbles on top, you should remove this. The kraut which is below the juicy waterline should remain unaffected. - Add the real lid of the mason jar and transfer to the fridge. - Eat a few days later. It's better a week later as it continues fermenting in its juices. Connect with us! Real Estate Investing: How We Got Started!

Hey guys! In this video we discuss how we got started in real estate investing, how we "house hack"ed our first place, and the advantages of real estate investing in general. As we described, we were able to put 3.5% down using an FHA loan on a 2-family (multifamily) property that we bought for $200,000 in early 2014 as our primary residence. We put about $7,000 down as a down payment for this house, spent about $8,000 in closing costs, and about $25,000 in renovations. Our monthly mortgage, property tax, and insurance payments were significantly lower than what we were paying to rent an apartment in Manhattan, and we were able to rent out part of our house. We ultimately rented out both units of our house and lived in the basement, which ended up making us $2,500 in profit. We used Airbnb to help us get started We're really interested in frugal living and making smart financial decisions. Easy Vegetable Recipe - Long Beans Sauteed with Onions, Peppers, Mushrooms (Bright Line Eating!)

Here's an easy vegetable recipe that is whole food, plant based and full of delicious PROTEIN! It's compliant with the no sugar, no flour Bright Line Eating style of eating that I follow and also the whole food plant based nutritarian diet! I've explained in the video how I measure to make 1 vegetable serving for Bright Line eating. It's also compatible with Dr. Fuhrman's nutritarian diet, Dr. MacGregor's How Not to Die plan, and Michael Pollan's advice to "eat food. mostly plants. not too much." We've lost 100 and 90 lbs each eating food like this, see our channel for additional weight loss and cooking videos. Recipe: Stir “Fried” Long Beans and Veggies (makes 6 bright line eating servings) Ingredients: 1 lb 2 oz long beans and 9 oz snap beans (OR 2 lbs of any type of regular green bean) 5 small onions (I used both red and white) Small container mushrooms (I chose shitake) 10 Thai chili peppers 2 small bell peppers 2 cups vegetable broth 2 Tbsp. Garlic paste 2 Tbsp. Ginger paste 2 Tbsp. Berbere seasoning 1 Tbsp. Tamari sauce 1 Tbsp. Onion powder Chili powder, Chili flakes to taste Sea salt [3 oz chopped Peanuts][optional] Instructions: - Start by bringing 15 cups of lightly salted water to a boil - Remove ends of beans, and into 5-6 in segments (if needed) - cook in boiling water for 5 min, stirring occasionally - when finished, set aside on a plate. - Bring vegetable broth to a boil in a large saucepan - Add 5 small onions to vegetable broth and cook for 3 min - Add ginger paste, Garlic paste, chopped thai chilis, berbere/harissa/or curry seasoning, onion powder, let it all cook together for 2 min (adding more veggie broth if needed) - Add the beans to the mixture, and sautee, stirring frequently for an additional 3 min - Add mushrooms, 1 tablespoon of tamari sauce, bell peppers - Add chili powder/flakes to taste for heat, and salt to taste - Add .5 oz of chopped peanuts if you'd like to add as a fat for bright line eating serving Connect with us! By subscribing to a frugal, minimalist lifestyle and investing our savings, we hope to have a nice nest egg in the future that will allow us to be financially independent. We don't buy: coffee ($157,000 savings); meat ($52,000 savings); summer produce ($22,000 savings); home fixes ($138,000 savings); nails ($94,000 savings); presents ($35,000 savings); eating lunches out ($433,000); cable ($65,000); wasted food ($44,000); and new furniture ($28,000). We look at these savings on a monthly basis, and act as though we would have invested the money we would save at a 5% annual interest rate over a 30 year period of time. We know that there are more appropriate ways to calculate "money saved" over time (we didn't consider, say, inflation), but we want to give a general estimate on how saving a few dollars every month can add up over time! We had a difficult growing season this year due to bad weather, Shannon being injured, and expanded our garden to include a lot more garden beds. Despite that, we were pretty successful in growing a lot of potatoes, tomatoes, beans, eggplant, radishes, carrots, and a handful of watermelons and squashes. Kitchen Renovation - DIY (Before & After )

Hey Guys, in this video we take you through our DIY kitchen renovation. We decided to totally get rid of our upper cabinets and go for an open industrial kitchen feel with open shelving. We're going to show you what it looked like before we renovated it - we bought a foreclosure and we had bad cabinets, a grease stain, weird lighting, a weird ceiling and lots of aesthetic issues with the kitchen. We created an open concept kitchen with no upper cabinets on one side, open shelving, beautiful tile work (azulejos in the Spanish and Portuguese tile tradition), and we got a commercial refrigerator and prep tables to help solidify our food prep habits. We also put in white subway tile, white countertops, and white cabinets on the other side. We really love the way our kitchen turned out because it is so unique to us, and because we designed it. We probably would have chosen something a little more on trend if we were worried about resale value or renting this out, but this is the kitchen that we intend to use for at least the next 10 years, and we wanted to do something that was going to make us very happy when we use it each day. The Husband Tag!! Love and happiness

Hey Guys, It’s been popular on YouTube to do a “husband tag” to get to know a couple. The last couple of months have been some of the craziest that John and I have ever gone through. He has entered into a really insane growth phase of his business, and he's working literally around the clock. On top of that, I injured my knee pretty seriously and needed to get an ACL and miniscus surgery which caused me a lot of pain, and has required me to go to physical therapy 3x a week for about 2.5 - 3 hrs each time. This has resulted in us not seeing each other very much, because by the time I get home, I'm so beat I go straight to sleep and he continues working late into the night. When we do spend time together, it tends to be project focused - fixing up the house, working on the garden, doing errands, prepping food. This combined with my rapid weight loss over the last few months has left us both pretty worn out and not feeling entirely like ourselves and a little disconnected. The husband tag video seemed like a nice way to spend some quality time together discussing our relationship and I'm so glad we did it! It was so fun to verbally go over these things together and discuss how we've evolved as a couple over the last 10 years. I've been reading Rachel Hollis' book "Girl, Wash your face" and become pretty interested in her company Chic Media that she's running with her husband Dave Hollis, the former Disney big shot. I read a piece she wrote about their relationship last night and it really resonated with me. She indicated that one of the best pieces of advice her husband gives to young men is to keep dating their wives. How often do you sit down with your significant other and have a long talk about the dynamic of your relationship? I'd encourage everyone to go through these questions - it's fun to discover what your partner thinks about you and very much feels like a getting to know you type first date.
