Thanks for this video! I got used to eating yakisaba in Japan for a couple of years, but never learned how to cook it (why bother when it's so cheap and available everywhere?). When I came back the US, it was surprisingly difficult just to FIND a mackerel, nevermind a cooked one. Enter me learning how to cook this bad boy by myself! I've never cleaned nor gutted a fish in my life, so your videos are appreciated!

Such a clean filet. I'm trying to get better at filetting whole fish, I have to practice feeling the edge of the bones w the knife more vs cutting through it and making a mangled mess

Pin bones not removed 🤔 One cut either side of the centre line after filleting and the pin bones are removed. 👍🐟

The way I got taught by old fishos was different. It started with the same initial cut then the knife is angled back to the tail then worked along the backbone taking the whole fillet off. With practice you can take out the ribs with the same single cut. The guys I've seen do it well are alot quicker than this and get an even neater finish. They also use alot thinner knife. I think this method is more suited to big expensive fish like tuna. I'm not convinced that this is the best method for this size fish.
